The Yamaha YTS-875 Custom tenor saxophone represents the earliest generation of Yamaha’s flagship professional tenor line, built before the later Custom EX and 82Z models split the series into more specialized voices. Serial number 006807, paired with its original M1 neck and classic “Custom” engraving, places this instrument among the desirable first-generation 875 examples from the late 1980s to early 1990s – a period many players regard as a high point in Yamaha’s professional manufacturing.
The original 875 was designed to offer exceptional precision, consistency, and tonal sophistication. Compared with the Yamaha 62, the 875 features a more substantial ribbed construction, increased hand-finishing, and a richer, denser tonal core. The result is a horn with excellent projection, highly reliable intonation, and a centered response that feels remarkably stable throughout the full range of the instrument. It offers more resistance and tonal depth than a 62 while remaining fluid and highly responsive under the fingers.
A major highlight of this example is the original M1 neck, a neck design prized for its balanced response and focused tonal center. The M1 offers moderate resistance with strong slotting and excellent stability in both the palm keys and lower register. Players often appreciate these early M1-equipped 875s for their versatility – capable of delivering warmth and complexity while maintaining the clean articulation and ergonomic precision Yamaha is known for.
This horn shows honest wear to the original lacquer, consistent with normal professional use over decades, but remains free of significant structural issues with no dings or dents noted. The pads are used but in good playing condition, sealing well and offering plenty of life for continued use. Overall, this is a strong player’s example – cosmetically showing its history while remaining mechanically solid and musically rewarding. Just adjusted!
For players accustomed to vintage American horns such as a Conn 10M or Martin Handcraft, the YTS-875 presents a different philosophy. Where vintage Conns often offer broad spread and raw complexity, the 875 emphasizes control, focus, and refinement. It is an instrument equally at home in jazz, studio, pit, or classical settings, and remains highly respected for its blend of sophistication and reliability.
