Few modern mouthpiece makers have achieved the near-legendary status of Freddie Gregory. Built entirely by hand in England and produced in extremely limited quantities, Gregory mouthpieces developed a devoted following among serious professional players for their remarkable combination of warmth, projection, complexity, and responsiveness.

This Custom Super Deluxe wooden tenor mouthpiece, serial number 0383, is an especially rare example from Gregory’s workshop. While his metal models are already highly sought after, the wooden versions are encountered far less frequently and remain among the most elusive boutique tenor mouthpieces on the market today.

Crafted from dense hardwood and hand-finished by Gregory himself, these pieces possess a uniquely organic tonal character – broad and resonant with exceptional harmonic richness and a surprisingly immediate response. There is a depth and texture to the sound that differs noticeably from hard rubber or metal designs, giving the player an unusually expressive palette while still maintaining strong projection and clarity.

Freddie Gregory’s designs were never intended as simple vintage reproductions. Instead, they combined the best qualities of classic large-chamber tenor mouthpieces with Gregory’s own highly refined approach to chamber geometry, facing work, and tonal balance. The result is a mouthpiece capable of producing a huge, sophisticated tenor sound equally at home in straight-ahead jazz settings, contemporary work, or more intimate acoustic playing.

Original Gregory mouthpieces have become increasingly difficult to acquire since his passing, and clean, unaltered examples continue to command strong interest from both collectors and players. Wooden Super Deluxe models in particular seldom surface publicly, making this an especially compelling opportunity for the serious tenor player or boutique mouthpiece collector.
