Crafted in Elkhart, Indiana during Conn’s mid-century prime, this Standard Steelay #3 alto mouthpiece exemplifies the company’s attention to precision and tonal richness. Made from Conn’s proprietary Steelay hard rubber—an exceptionally stable ebonite blend advertised as “as durable as steel”—these mouthpieces were hand-cut and hand-finished for consistency and longevity.

The #3 lay offers a medium tip opening and facing length, providing an ideal balance between warmth and flexibility. Its large chamber and rounded throat deliver a resonant, centered tone with smooth projection and excellent intonation—producing the full, lyrical sound characteristic of 1940s–1950s jazz and concert-band playing.

Players will find this mouthpiece responsive and comfortable, pairing especially well with vintage Conn altos but equally capable on modern horns seeking a classic, darker tonal palette.
