The Yamaha YTS-61 Purple Label represents one of Yamaha’s earliest professional saxophone designs and remains highly respected among players for its precision, reliability, and focused tone. Produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s, these early Japanese-built Yamahas helped establish the company’s reputation for professional-level saxophones and laid the groundwork for the later YTS-62, which would become one of the most widely used professional tenors in the world.
Often viewed as the direct predecessor to the legendary 62, the YTS-61 shares many of the same design concepts: excellent intonation, clean and ergonomic keywork, and a tone that balances clarity with warmth. These early Yamaha horns are especially prized by players who appreciate their immediate response, even scale, and remarkable consistency across the entire range of the instrument.
This example is structurally excellent and performance ready. The horn is mechanically sound with 100% structural integrity, and it plays extremely well throughout the range. It currently has used pads that seal properly, allowing the instrument to respond quickly and speak easily from low Bb through the palm keys.
There are a few professional solder repairs to key guards, performed cleanly and solidly, and the instrument remains structurally stable. Cosmetically, the original lacquer shows typical wear from years of honest playing, giving the horn the well-earned character of a working professional instrument. The finish wear does not affect playability and is common among vintage Yamahas that have spent years in active musical service.
In the hands, the instrument delivers the qualities Yamaha became famous for: smooth key action, excellent balance, and dependable tuning. The tone is focused and flexible, capable of covering everything from jazz and commercial work to classical and pit playing.
For players seeking a reliable professional tenor with vintage Yamaha pedigree, the Purple Label YTS-61 remains an outstanding value – offering the feel and performance of Yamaha’s classic pro design at a far more accessible price point than later flagship models.
