In stock
This C.G. Conn Artist Special alto saxophone, serial number 122788, dates to approximately 1924 and is a correct example of the New Wonder I model. Finished in original gold plate and featuring a custom Artist Deluxe figural engraving of a young woman at the beach, this instrument represents one of the most visually and musically desirable altos produced by Conn during the early 1920s.
The New Wonder I era is widely respected for its large-bore design, producing a broad, dark, and resonant sound with exceptional projection and flexibility. These altos are especially prized by advanced players for their vocal quality and expansive tonal palette, making them ideal for early jazz, swing, and expressive solo work.
This example retains approximately 95% of its original gold plating, with light wear in normal contact and play areas, consistent with careful professional use. The gold finish remains vibrant and well-preserved, an uncommon level of retention for a gold-plated Conn of this age. The bell engraving is deeply cut and highly detailed, clearly exceeding standard factory patterns and indicative of a custom Artist Deluxe commission.
Mechanically, the saxophone is in very good condition and plays great. There are signs of posts having been professionally re-soldered at some point in its history – clean, stable work typical of responsible maintenance on a century-old instrument, with no negative impact on response or regulation.
