Likely built in the late 1920s as a Buescher stencil, this horn has lived a full century of music, travel, and probably a few bar fights. A survivor from the golden age of American saxophone manufacturing, this Fischer-branded bari was likely made by Buescher in Elkhart, Indiana and bears all the hallmarks of a True Tone–era horn: big, resonant tone, solid brass construction, and enough personality to fill a dance hall.

This example is… let’s call it “well loved.” It’s got battle scars everywhere – dings, small dents, patches of metal staining where the lacquer gave up the ghost decades ago, and resoldered parts that look like they’ve seen more than one repair bench. The lacquer is worn to a dignified dullness, the kind that says “I’ve played every VFW hall east of the Mississippi.” The neck is a replacement, but the horn plays surprisingly well and belts out that classic big, smoky baritone sound with conviction.

Despite its scrappy appearance, this bari plays like it means business – loud, warm, and unapologetically vintage. It’s the kind of horn you take to a gig and people ask, “What is that thing?” before it rattles the floorboards.

Features:

  • Serial #116679 – manufactured circa late 1920s
  • Likely Buescher True Tone stencil (Carl Fischer branding)
  • Structurally solid but cosmetically… “experienced”
  • Replacement neck, numerous dings and small dents throughout
  • Heavy lacquer wear with visible metal staining and resoldered joints
  • Plays with a big, booming vintage tone that defies its appearance

A battle-tested baritone that looks like it’s seen every dance floor and survived every afterparty, but it still shows up, still plays hard, and still sounds fantastic. Not a museum piece, but absolutely a conversation starter with serious musical chops.
