This is a vintage Brilhart hard rubber alto saxophone mouthpiece marked 3, and based on the body shape, engraving style, and oxidized hard rubber coloration, it appears to be an early Great Neck / Mineola-era Brilhart. These early hard rubber Brilharts are among the most respected vintage Brilhart pieces, prized for their warm core, quick response, and lively projection. They occupy a sweet spot between the round warmth of a vintage Meyer and the focused immediacy of early Otto Link pieces, making them especially attractive to jazz and section players.

This example shows the classic oxidation associated with true vintage hard rubber – the body has shifted from original jet black to a brown/olive tone, which is actually a positive authenticity indicator for older hard rubber Brilharts. The beak shows moderate bite wear and surface scuffing consistent with honest use, but the rails, tip, and table appear intact with no obvious chips or cracks. The chamber and window also look clean, suggesting the piece remains highly playable.

A 3 facing on vintage Brilharts is relatively closed by modern standards (roughly around .072″ tip opening for alto), which generally produces excellent control, strong center, and easy articulation. These are especially appealing for players seeking a classic alto voice – rich mids, slightly compressed focus, and that signature vintage American jazz character. Many players pair these with medium-soft reeds to open the response slightly. Comparable original 3* examples have become increasingly collectible in recent years.

Based on the engraving and body design, this piece most likely dates to the mid-1940s to early 1950s.

1942-1946 (Great Neck era) examples often show early logo styling and large stamped fonts
1946-1951 (Mineola era) retained similar geometry but dropped the Great Neck shank stamp
Later Brilharts became more plastic-based and usually stayed black rather than oxidizing brown

Because this example shows substantial oxidation and classic early geometry, our best estimate is circa 1946-1952. Theo Wanne’s Brilhart chronology aligns well with this dating.

This is the kind of vintage Brilhart that appeals to players who understand why old American mouthpieces have such a devoted following. The oxidation tells us this is almost certainly genuine old hard rubber rather than later plastic production. A facing of 3 makes it a more controlled piece than a screaming lead setup, so we’d expect a sound with focus, warmth, and vintage sweetness rather than raw brightness. For a player chasing an old-school alto sound – think lyrical swing, early bop, or section work – this is a very compelling piece.
