A vintage Berg Larsen stainless steel tenor saxophone mouthpiece, marked 85 / 2 / M, complete with its original Berg Larsen ligature and metal cap. Long favored by professional saxophonists for their unmistakable projection, focused core, and powerful articulation, vintage Berg Larsen metal pieces remain some of the most sought-after performance mouthpieces in the jazz and commercial saxophone world.
This example features an 85 tip opening (approximately .085″), making it a versatile medium opening that offers excellent flexibility without requiring the air demands of larger Berg facings. The 2 baffle provides added brilliance and projection, while the M (medium) chamber balances edge with body, producing the classic Berg Larsen sound – focused, immediate, and highly responsive.
Tonally, this mouthpiece is well suited for players seeking a strong, punchy tenor voice with plenty of presence for jazz, funk, rock, and contemporary commercial playing. It offers quick articulation, excellent projection, and the unmistakable clarity that made Berg Larsen a favorite of many prominent tenor players.
This example shows honest cosmetic wear from regular use, including surface scratches and visible bite wear on the beak, consistent with a well-played vintage mouthpiece. The mouthpiece includes its original matching ligature and metal cap, a notable bonus as these are frequently missing.
