A classic vintage Selmer Selmer Paris Soloist F alto saxophone mouthpiece, crafted in hard rubber (ebonite) and produced approximately 1960s-1970s, likely from the later short shank / scroll-shank Soloist era based on the body profile, decorative shank ring, and stamp style. The Soloist remains one of Selmer’s most revered mouthpiece designs, celebrated for its focused core, remarkable projection, and rich tonal complexity. These pieces became legendary among classical players and jazz artists alike for their ability to maintain precision without sounding sterile.

The F facing sits in the medium range for alto Soloists, offering an excellent balance of resistance and flexibility. It provides quick response, strong articulation, and a centered sound that can be pushed for power while retaining the refined tonal character Selmer is known for. Players often describe good Soloists as having an unusually “vocal” quality – dense in the center, but with beautiful harmonic bloom.

This example is in very good vintage condition with light honest cosmetic wear consistent with age and use. The body stamp remains strong and legible, and the mouthpiece retains a clean chamber and baffle. From the provided images, the tip, rails, and table appear clean and even, with no obvious signs of refacing, pull-down, or structural damage. There is some normal tooth wear on the beak but nothing unusual for a vintage player’s piece.

Vintage Selmer Soloists have earned their reputation for good reason. On alto especially, they occupy a special space between the compact focus of a classical piece and the flexibility needed for jazz improvisation. They can whisper with incredible control yet still cut when pushed.

The F facing is one we especially like for players who want a true vintage Selmer feel without moving into extremely open territory. It rewards good air support and embouchure with a sound that feels both sophisticated and expressive. For players chasing the classic Marcel Mule / early Phil Woods / vintage French alto tonal aesthetic, a good Soloist is always worth serious attention.
