The King Zephyr tenor saxophone, serial number 263994, dates to the mid-1940s and represents one of the most refined stages of the Zephyr line before the full emergence of the Super 20. By this period, King had fully developed the Zephyr into a mature professional instrument – combining strong projection, a centered tonal core, and a responsive, flexible feel that continues to appeal to serious players.
Often considered a direct predecessor to the Super 20, these later Zephyrs share much of the same tonal DNA, offering a bold, full-bodied sound with clarity and control. For players seeking a vintage American tenor with depth and presence, the Zephyr remains one of the most compelling options in its class.
Condition
This instrument has been relacquered, with the finish currently in good visual condition throughout. While the relacquer removes the horn from collector-grade status, it presents cleanly and evenly, giving the instrument a polished and well-maintained appearance.
The neck has been previously modified to accommodate an amplification pickup, and has since been professionally patched. The repair is stable and functional.
Pads are used but in good playing condition, sealing well across the instrument. The horn is currently set up as a solid, ready-to-play example without the need for overhaul.
Key Features

- Relacquered body with clean, even finish
- Neck professionally patched from prior pickup installation
- Pads in good used condition, sealing and playing well

Playability & Sound
The King Zephyr tenor is known for its commanding tonal presence. This example delivers a strong, centered core with a slightly darker and more focused profile than a comparable Conn 10M, while maintaining excellent projection and clarity.
The response is even and dependable across the range, with enough flexibility to support both expressive solo playing and section work. Compared to a Martin Committee, the Zephyr tends to feel more focused and direct, with a bit more edge and projection when pushed.
Despite its vintage keywork, the instrument remains comfortable in hand, offering a solid and familiar feel for players accustomed to classic American tenors.
Why Buy a Vintage Professional Tenor?
For many players, vintage professional saxophones like the King Zephyr offer a level of tonal complexity and build quality that is difficult to replicate in modern student or intermediate instruments. Compared to something like a modern entry-level tenor, the Zephyr provides:
- Greater tonal depth and character
- Stronger projection and presence
- A more substantial and resonant feel
- Long-term value retention as a professional instrument
This makes it an appealing option for advancing students, serious hobbyists, and working players alike.
This is a classic example of a player-grade vintage professional tenor. While the relacquer and neck patch remove it from the collector category, they also place it into a much more accessible price range for musicians who prioritize sound and performance.
At its core, this remains a true King Zephyr – powerful, expressive, and musically rewarding. For the right player, this represents an opportunity to step into a professional vintage tenor at a fraction of the cost of higher-condition examples or Super 20 models.
Ships in its original case in good vintage condition.
