A rare and exceptionally well-preserved Conn Transitional Deluxe alto saxophone, serial number M243575, manufactured circa 1931-1932 during the celebrated period between the New Wonder II “Chu Berry” models and the later 6M Artist series. Produced during Conn’s golden era, these transitional instruments represent one of the most sought-after chapters in American saxophone manufacturing.
This example retains its original factory gold-plated finish with approximately 95%+ coverage remaining. The elaborate factory engraving remains crisp and highly detailed, while the gold plate presents beautifully throughout the body and bell. Original professional features include rolled tone holes, split bell keys, the original microtuner neck, and the distinctive nail-file G# touchpiece. The saxophone remains free from any noticeable dings or dents and presents as an unusually well-preserved example for its age.
The horn is fitted with used pads that continue to seal well and retain substantial playing life. Mechanically, it remains a solid player while still preserving the originality and character that collectors seek in a premium vintage Conn.

There are many vintage Conn altos on the market, but only a small percentage occupy the sweet spot between player appeal and collector desirability. This horn sits squarely in that category.
The transitional Conn altos combine much of the broad, resonant character associated with the New Wonder II “Chu Berry” instruments while incorporating refinements that would soon evolve into the legendary 6M Artist models. The result is a horn with tremendous depth, projection, and tonal complexity, paired with surprisingly modern playability.
What truly elevates this example is the original gold-plated finish. Gold-plated transitional Conns are far less common than their silver-plated or lacquered counterparts, and examples retaining this level of original finish are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Combined with the strong engraving, original microtuner neck, rolled tone holes, and excellent cosmetic preservation, this is the type of instrument that appeals equally to serious players and advanced collectors.
For those seeking a professional Conn from one of the company’s most desirable periods, this is an exceptionally attractive example that captures everything enthusiasts love about the transitional era.
