This gold-over-silver Conn New Wonder II “Chu Berry” Tenor Saxophone, serial number M154198, is an exceptionally rare and visually striking example from Conn’s legendary early professional era. Built during the period associated with tenor great Leon “Chu” Berry, these horns are renowned for their powerful resonance, bold projection, and rich tonal complexity. The gold-over-silver finish was one of Conn’s highest premium offerings, produced in very small numbers and prized today by both collectors and serious performers.
This horn has been recently serviced, offering tight, confident key action and excellent mechanical reliability. The plating is remarkably well preserved, with approximately 95% of the original gold remaining over the silver base layer, showing only modest age-appropriate wear. The body is free from significant dents, maintaining clean lines and structural integrity—an uncommon condition for a century-old professional tenor. The majority of the wear is to the neck, where the matte silver shows.
The tone is classic Chu-era Conn: big, warm, resonant, and complex, with a broad low register, colorful mids, and a projecting brilliance when pushed. The gold-over-silver plating contributes to a subtly richer, more resonant response than standard gold-over-brass finishes, adding both musical and collector appeal. Don’t be confused by the flashy looks – this saxophone is a player that can scream while also hitting soft and subtle tones.
