Brilhart Tonalin 3 Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece (White Acrylic / “Tonalin”)
$300.00

Approximate production date: mid-1950s to mid-1960s, most likely Carlsbad era (1954-1966) based on the white Tonalin body, serial numbering style (112966), and absence of earlier Great Neck markings. Brilhart moved production from New York to Carlsbad, California in 1954, and Tonalin pieces from this era are especially well regarded for their quick response and slightly more edge compared with the earlier Great Neck pieces.
The Brilhart Tonalin is one of Arnold Brilhart’s most iconic designs and remains a favorite among players seeking the classic mid-century American tenor sound. Molded from Brilhart’s ivory-colored Tonalin plastic composite and fitted with the signature black bite plate, these pieces became famous for their combination of warmth, focus, and effortless response. Players such as Stan Getz and Charlie Parker were closely associated with Brilhart designs, helping cement their legendary status in jazz history.
This size 3 facing is on the more moderate / medium-closed side by modern standards, making it an excellent choice for players who favor control, centered tone, and easy articulation. Tonally, this piece leans toward a lush, round core with a sweet upper register, producing the classic airy-yet-focused vintage Brilhart character. Compared with many modern high-baffle pieces, the Tonalin offers a more traditional voice – broad, lyrical, and highly expressive for straight-ahead jazz, ballad work, and vintage-inspired playing.
Condition is very good overall for its age. The body remains clean with strong original color and no visible major cracks – an important consideration, as vintage Tonalins are known to be somewhat prone to shank cracking. There is honest cosmetic wear including light surface marks, discoloration from use, and bite-plate wear consistent with age. The rails, tip, and chamber appear clean and structurally sound from the provided photos.
Vintage Brilhart Tonalin tenor mouthpieces remain highly collectible, particularly crack-free examples from the pre-Selmer era. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a classic Brilhart known for its warm vintage voice, fast response, and unmistakable old-school jazz character.
