A desirable vintage Brilhart metal tenor mouthpiece bearing the early “Designed by Arnold Brilhart” stamp. Arnold Brilhart was one of the most influential saxophone mouthpiece designers of the 20th century, and his early pieces remain highly regarded for their lively response, focused projection, and distinctly American jazz sound. Metal Brilharts from this lineage are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in clean, original condition.

This example is marked 4 and shows moderate cosmetic wear consistent with age and normal use, including finish wear and some bite marks on the original bite plate. The table, rails, and tip are intact, with no obvious signs of major damage or repair. The body remains straight and the original stampings are still visible, making this a strong player-grade and collector-grade example.

These vintage Brilhart metal pieces are often appreciated for their combination of brightness, quick articulation, and compact core, sitting tonally somewhere between classic Link warmth and later high-baffle power pieces. They can be excellent choices for jazz, big band lead tenor, or players seeking a lively vintage metal mouthpiece with substantial projection.

The “Designed by Arnold Brilhart” stamp places this design in Brilhart’s early production lineage, originating in the late 1930s through 1940s, though metal examples like this are generally associated with mid-century production, roughly 1940s-1950s. These early Brilhart designs predate or overlap with the famous Great Neck era and are increasingly sought after by vintage mouthpiece enthusiasts.

This is a cool piece – not as commonly encountered as the later Carlsbad Ebolins or more modern Brilharts, and with a distinctly different personality. The smaller 4 facing makes it relatively controlled and efficient, likely favoring players who want immediate response and strong focus over sheer openness. For collectors, the appeal lies in the early Brilhart pedigree; for players, it offers that unmistakable vintage Brilhart punch and articulation.
