This early-1920s C.G. Conn New Wonder alto saxophone is a beautiful example from one of the most important periods in American saxophone manufacturing history. Finished in original silver plate with a rich vintage patina throughout, this horn delivers the huge, colorful Conn sound that made these instruments favorites of professional players during the early jazz era.
Built before the later “Chu Berry” period but already incorporating many of Conn’s most celebrated design features, this alto has the broad, resonant voice that players associate with the best vintage American saxophones. The tone is warm, complex, and powerful, with a particularly rich low register and a wonderfully textured core throughout the range of the instrument. Compared to later altos, these early Conn New Wonder horns tend to have a larger, more orchestral sound with exceptional projection and personality.
The original silver plate remains 100% intact and has aged beautifully over time, giving the instrument an authentic vintage appearance with tremendous character and depth. Conn engraving from this era remains among the finest produced on American saxophones, and the naturally aged silver finish gives the horn a classic Jazz Age aesthetic without appearing overly polished or refinished, just a brightly-polished inner bell so you stand out.
Mechanically, the saxophone is currently playing well with pads in used but good condition. The horn seals properly throughout and offers a solid vintage playing setup without immediately requiring a full overhaul. Cosmetically, the body presents especially well overall with no noticeable dents or scratches, preserving the strong visual presentation and originality that collectors and players alike appreciate in vintage Conn instruments.
