Conn C sopranos occupy a fascinating place in saxophone history, bridging the worlds of early jazz, vaudeville, classical parlor music, and home performance during the early twentieth century. This 1919 straight silver-plated C soprano is an especially fine example, retaining its original finish, original case, and original mouthpiece while presenting in remarkably well-preserved condition throughout.
Designed to play in the concert key of C rather than Bb, Conn C sopranos became popular during the 1910s and 1920s for players who wanted to read directly from piano or vocal sheet music without transposition. Today, these instruments have developed a devoted following among collectors, recording artists, doubling woodwind players, and musicians seeking a uniquely sweet and haunting vintage soprano voice.
This example features the rich, colorful tonal character that made Conn one of the dominant American saxophone manufacturers of the era. The sound is focused yet warm, with a wonderfully vocal quality that feels especially at home in early jazz, ragtime, folk, and atmospheric modern recording work. Straight Conn sopranos from this period are admired for their lively response and complex tonal texture, particularly when compared to later more clinical soprano designs.
The original silver plate remains approximately 100% intact with only some light wear areas, giving the horn exceptional visual presentation and preserving the beautiful engraving work typical of Conn instruments from this era. The body presents in very fine condition overall, reflecting careful long-term ownership and preservation.
Mechanically, the saxophone has been recently serviced and is currently playing very well. The pads are lightly used and remain in strong condition, allowing the instrument to function immediately as a highly playable vintage example without requiring additional restoration work.
