Out of stock
This is an early and beautifully preserved c. 1915–16 Buescher-made curved soprano saxophone, distributed under the “Perfecto” brand for the New York jobber C. Bruno & Son. Built in the years immediately following Buescher’s 1914 pad-cup patent, this example represents a rare and highly collectible pre-True Tone curved soprano. It features original silver plating with a naturally developed patina throughout the body, a gently polished bell, with new cork/felts and used-but-well-sealing pads. The result is a horn that retains its vintage character while remaining fully performance-ready.
Construction and Features
This soprano showcases classic early Buescher craftsmanship: soldered tonehole chimneys, compact and elegant curvature, and the correct period keywork. One detail especially accurate for Buescher and Buescher stencils of the era is the single pearl touchpiece positioned below the octave key – the rest of the key touches are solid metal domes, exactly as produced in the mid-1910s. Several of these metal touches show honest wear-through to the brass from decades of regular playing, highlighting the horn’s musical life rather than neglect.
The silver plate is original, with the bell selectively shined to bring out the flair while the remainder of the body was intentionally left in its natural, even patina.
Condition
This instrument has been recently serviced and is in strong playing condition. It features fresh cork throughout and pads that are used but well-sealing, providing reliable response without compromising originality. The keywork is properly regulated and surprisingly tight for a horn of this vintage. Cosmetic condition is consistent with a well-loved, century-old saxophone: patina on the body, worn touchpieces, and engraving that remains crisp and detailed, but no dents, evidence of soldering, or scratches.
Playability
Early Buescher curved sopranos are known for their warm, centered, almost vocal tone. This example speaks smoothly from low Bb through the upper register, with stable intonation for a pre-1920 design. It accepts modern soprano mouthpieces comfortably and responds with an expressive, lyrical feel. The curved design adds projection and character, making this horn ideal for players who appreciate early American acoustics without sacrificing reliability.
Engraving and Aesthetics
The bell engraving is a beautifully cut early Buescher floral pattern surrounding the “Perfecto – Made by Bruno NY” branding. The polished bell contrasts attractively with the matte patina of the body, creating a visually rich presentation without over-restoration. The worn brass on several metal key touches adds an authentic, tactile charm and tells the story of many years of dedicated playing.
A rare 1915–16 Buescher-made “Perfecto” curved soprano saxophone, original silver plate, correct early keywork including a single pearl below the octave key, and an expertly balanced finish of polished engraving and preserved patina. With fresh cork, used-but-well-sealing pads, and a responsive setup, this soprano stands equally as a collectible and a player – a compelling example of early American saxophone history.
As the neck is attached it has difficulty fitting into most modern curved soprano cases; instead we’re shipping it in a foam-lined hard-plastic case designed for cameras and wireless microphones; this both keeps it safe while also convenient for travel.
